The day of battery powered homes is coming and that’s getting closer to reality for homeowners in New York, California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, and Arizona. Many municipalities in those states are revamping their electrical grids and turning to batteries to make them more efficient. Plans call for batteries to be tucked into the neighborhood junction box or in a substation.

The average cost of setting up the solar panel and back up batteries for running the house can be from $20,000 to $40,000 depending on the house size and needs. Many states and utility companies will help to subsidize the install which brings the cost way down. With the life expectancy of 10 to 20 years, your house could be almost off the grid and pay for itself.

In Vermont, Tesla Energy and Green Mountain Power have teamed up to offer 2,000 homeowners a Tesla Powerwall for $15 a month. The 13.5-kilowatt-hour batteries, which retail for $5,500, can be used when the electrical grid is strained at maximum capacity, saving utility companies from having to use pricier forms of electricity. Those savings could then be passed on to consumers.

Sunshine State Could take the Lead.

Here in South Florida, the solar-powered homes could become a reality sooner than one may think. With sunshine most of the days throughout the year and plenty of high-rise buildings on which to install the panels it is more feasible to do than any other state. I strongly hope that the technology advancement keeps moving ahead in bringing the costs of manufacturing the batteries and solar panels to make it more affordable for everyone.
